The different quality of light fascinates me and it is what draws me into photography over and over again. I especially like the morning light, when only patches of light are visible while everything else is still in shade. Often I go into the garden before breakfast just to see what the light looks like. Of course this only works on non-gloomy mornings, and we had a lot of gloomy mornings recently (just debunking the myth of sunny California).
In the morning the sun has to get past the enormous old Coastal Live Oak next to our property. Rays of sunshine dance through her branches and leaves and lighten up only small areas in the garden.
There are always shadows on the fence that delight me.
Later in the day, the birdbath will become quite popular. One of the Mourning Doves loves to hang out on the angel's head.
Look how the Salvia sclarea lightens up in the few rays of sunshine. When the seeds develop, this plant becomes very popular with the Lesser Goldfinches. They balance on the swaying stems and pick the seeds. I love watching them while they do that. The bumblebees love this flower as well. And as an extra perk, it's drought tolerant and thrives in sun as well as in shade.
The deer love to visit the front garden. I wish the would eat the weeds with the same enthusiasm as they raid the olive tree, smokebush and sometimes even the buckwheat! Evidently they haven't read the note that "deer don't like this plant". Well, mine do!

Light and shadow are one of my favorite things to look at and photograph.
When I saw that you wrote, I first looked at the pictures. I immediately decided that I would definitely write about shadows. Then I read what you wrote and found out that this is actually what your writing is mainly about.
My favorite pictures were the shadows falling on the wooden fence. ( 3-4). They are so natural, they fit so well into their surroundings, and if the shadows weren't there, they would be missing. That's its decoration.

Now that I've looked through the pictures again, I have to write that the poppies in the first picture are beautiful too.

If I was rich I'd buy that pig too. He's adorable. And he would look great in your garden. And you have some interesting light too. I love the way you captured the sun light in all your glorious garden pictures. That darling deer looks great too, even through the screen. As to the pig Talavera pot, it's so cool. Talavera is expensive, but I believe you could find it priced more moderately down here by the Mexican border. There's a place that has an amazing collection that I go to sometimes. So, come on down!

Yes, he counts! Wonderful example. My favorite are the sun puddles that Lizzie manages to find, even when all else is in shade. Your deer is beautiful.
Carola, like yourself, I enjoy the early morning light the most and it's also my favorite time of day next to sunset. I enjoyed the tour of light and shadows from around your yard and yes that pottery pig would look delightful in it ! Perhaps you can convince the Geek that it's a "must have" ? The deer was sweet, the skunk family not as much and I liked how you said they were "stinking" cute, perhaps they will be some day and not cute😟 but hope not.
Morning light and shadow are wonderful for photography. I like going into my garden in the morning, too. Like you, we've had plenty of gloomy looking days so the shadows are not strong. I won't complain as eastern North America and Europe are suffering terribly with the heat.
The pig planter is colourful and striking!
