Hawks And Herons (Photo of the Week)

No problem to decide which is the photo of this week - when I saw this hawk during a morning walk through my neighborhood yesterday and took several pictures of him/her I already knew that this one would be it. I am not quite sure what kind of hawk this is; I suspect a red-shouldered one since I can hear them all the time around here. If you recognize this kind, please let me know.

I had seen some red-shouldered hawks at my favorite lake recently and was lucky to capture some of them with my camera.

This one looks pretty young

Down at the Golden Gate a few weeks ago we saw a red-tailed hawk circling above us. I thought he was gorgeous - and you can clearly see his red tail feathers.

When I look at this one, I think he looks more like the hawk in the first photo. So perhaps that one is a red-tailed hawk after all? Isn't he an amazing beauty? These birds fascinate me every time I see them.

At the lake I also saw a beautiful green heron very close to the trail I was walking along. I took pictures of him - he only looked back at us once, just to check us out, I assume, and then thought that we are not dangerous to him at all. Rightly so!

In the wooded area across from our house I could hear great horned owls in some nights - I hope to see them one day, and I also have to look for the nest of "our" great horned owl pair at the lake. It is that time again!

Amazing photos, Carola! Beautiful work. It must be a good week for birds of prey, as I too have seen some beauties this week, whilst driving back home from my Dad's house, so no photo unfortunately. I am not familiar with the birds in your photos - none of those are here in the UK.

Hello Carola, Your bird photos are lovely and I really love the Green Heron. I do not believe I have ever seen one before. I have created a Fiber Nest that I have placed on my blog you may want to see. Hugs Judy

What breath taking photos! I love the first one of the red tail flying, but I can see the appeal of the first as well (the texture in the branches and deep blue sky really frame your subject).

Wow!

I work in the City Center in Minneapolis, and we have a peregrine falcon that nests on the top of the building. I work on the 48th of the 50 floors, and it always knocks me sideways to see her flying outside my window!

Gorgeous photos, Carola! My sister and I saw four red-tailed hawks soaring about the hills this weekend - we've never seen that many together before - but they were so far away I didn't even get out the camera. They're easy to identify by that distinctive cry.

Just wanted to pop by and say I hope you enjoy the gelli plate when it arrives. They are such fun!

These photos are great - I have seen hawks in our woods but usually they are so high or hidden in the branches that I cannot see them well enough to take photos of them – yours are so clear – what great captures!

I had a sparrow hawk at the bird table the other day. He wasn’t looking for bird food, he was looking for small birds to take.

It’s wonderful to watch birds all year round but the time is coming when we see much more of them because they will be courting soon.
