This week's prompt over at Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date is "favorite animal". Have you guessed that my favorite animal is the cat?
While I love cats, they are not my favorite animals. I love all animals, but there are a few that are closer to my heart. It was a hard decision between these four:
Wolf - this is a Mexican Gray Wolf in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum
Coyote, in Yellowstone
Moose, in Alaska
Cougar, in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum.
These four are my favorites, but in the end one of them is a bit more of a favorite - the coyote, the trickster in Native American legends, the Songdog of the West. My spirit animal.
We saw and heard a lot of them in Yellowstone. Among them has been this female:
Look closely - can you see the coyote in the middle of Highway 50 near Lake Tahoe?
And s/he is off into the woods!
We also saw them often in Yosemite. While we were camping there in the High Country we heard them every night.
We even sometimes hear them here in our neighborhood. That usually gets me very excited - and even more when I heard two mountain lions one night. It is something very extraordinary when you lie in your bed and you can hear these wild animals. I for one deeply love this.
Coyotes are very smart animals and have outstanding survival skills. You can find them in the wilderness, rural areas and even big cities. There is an area in San Francisco where coyotes roam and you probably have heard about the coyote in New York City's Central Park. But unfortunately not everybody loves them; every year there are competitive trophy hunts on coyotes in some states (the more coyotes are killed, the better), an abhorrent practice.
They're also master sleepers.

And I almost forgot - there's even a coyote in my garden! He comes from Mexico.
So, what's for dinner? I often like to use the wok when cooking - just last week we had ramen noodles with baked tofu, broccoli, red bell pepper and romaine lettuce. It's a quick, easy and healthy dinner.

...your favorite has piercing eyes!
Lovely photos
I LOVE that wolf photo. Just spectacular!
The wolves look so interesting
I like hearing coyotes from the comfort of a bed, too. We don't have them on our island, but I hear them in other places.
Those are great favorites. Our Eastern coyote are different from the western ones as some early ones mated with wolves before they moved back down here. They're bigger, but I like listening to them at night. Who wouldn't like a moose, they are so big and gangly. I'm also fascinated by mountain lions because I swear we have some hidden away here in New Hampshire. You have some super photos, and nice coyote in your garden. I would add owls, cows, bald eagles, black bears and bison to my list too. Have a super weekend.hugs-Erika
Wow, nice photis. Luv pasta
Much♡love
Coming up with a favourite animal is just about impossible! Every time I think of one another pops into my head. I could easily cast a vote for coyote, but there is a very handsome Red Fox who patrols our neighbourhood too. Even the squirrel who daily hops up onto the window sill for a little snack would merit consideration. In reality they are all incredible, wonderful, creatures and it is a joy and a privilege to share my life with them. Every lizard, every snake, every turtle, every bird, every furry animal large or small, everything that flies, swims or crawls, everything that comprises the scintillating diversity of life on Earth. I’d even include a few humans! Enormous hugs - David
I wrote a comment but it's just gone. Have a great weekend, hugs!
YOur animal photos are great. We loved that museum too!
You and I are of the same ilk. I love all of nature's animals and birds including the Coyote. When I lived by the lake I would see Coyote's run across my yard or hear them yip, yip, yipping in a nearby woods. In the State Park just down the road there was a big male that I loved. He looked big enough to be a wolf, but he was most certainly a Coyote. Sometimes at night when I was out walking Izzi, I would hear them near by and I would see the male and female fox out hunting and even the hooting of a Great Horned owl or the sweet voice of Screech owls. I do so miss my time on the lake. And like you, I also love cats ... we have two females at this point and have to keep one upstairs and one down because they don't get along (typical females, right?) They are both gingers and, according to my Vet, it is rare for gingers to be female.
So, I had to get up early today to take my Granddaughter to school (it is below 0 and I don't want her to have to stand out in the cold waiting for the bus) so I am debating whether I want to take a short nap before I start my day or just push through it until tonight ... do you want to guess which I will do? Hope all is well with you Carola and I am sorry I have been remiss about writing comments ... it is a long story, but my life has been very busy and not in a good way. Flu season, ya know 😝

"The SongDog of the West" -- I've never heard that term for a coyote before! Great photos and I love the colourful ceramic coyote in your garden!
