At the end of August/beginning of September Kaefer took a solo hike along the West Highland Way in the Scottish Highlands. The West Highland Way (WHW) is a 96 miles (154 km) long walking route from Milngavie to Fort William. Milngavie is north of Glasgow and Fort William is in the Scottish Highlands at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles.
For the first night she had booked a room because she had expected to arrive late and didn't want to pitch her small tent in the dark. It was a good decision since this was a very long day.
The next day, along Loch Lomond, was a mixed bag regarding the weather.
But it was lovely when she arrived at her campsite, after having hiked more than 32 km (19.8 miles).
Every morning she got up real early and that morning she was rewarded with a beautiful view of the very still lake.
Loch Lomond is the largest fresh water lake in Great Britain and the WHW follows its eastern shore which extends roughly 24 miles (39 km). She sent us many beautiful photos of this section.
That evening she did some "wild camping" which is allowed on the WHW. It was too far to the nearest established campsites. She had hiked about 23 km (14.3 miles) that day. She had found a beautiful spot right on the shore.
Unfortunately, the weather got worse. She told me that after the second night, which was rainy, her tent never comletely dried - and that, of course, made her backpack even heavier. This reminds me of our camping trip through Alaska more than 20 years ago when our tent seemed to be constantly wet.
But Kaefer kept her smile.
While she didn't meet many other hikers during the day - everybody was more or less hiking in the same direction, South to North - she did meet other living beings.
What would the Scottish Highlands be without highland cows?
Or without heather?
Despite the rain, every now and then the sun peeked through and Kaefer shot some atmospheric photos.
One hiker who was passing her was kind enough to take a photo of her at Devil's Staircase.
The view from Devil's Staircase. It sure is a lonely area.
Every now and then there were rocks put in the path in order to cross creeks.
On the last leg - another 24 km - the weather turned to the better...
... only to turn cloudy again near Ben Nevis.
Finally, on the seventh day - the end of the way!
She sure looks happy and can be very proud of this accomplishment. I sure am proud of her.
That evening's dinner was well deserved!
All photos are by Kaefer and her face joins Nicole's Friday Face Off today.

Bravo, Kaefer. I admire her dedication and willingness to suffer bad weather to accomplish her goal. Scottish weather is notoriously unpredictable. Last time I was there- it was in August - one day the daytime high only made it to six degrees. She did indeed earn her meal! Many hugs - David
A great adventure.
Your photos are wonderful.
What a beautiful area!.
Kudos 👏 💐 Kaefer. The meal looks delicious 😋 and well deserved. Dear Carola, thank you so for sharing these lovely photos of this magnificent event. ❤️
Wow! You captured some glorious landscapes with your camera. Kudos to Kaefer, and Blessings!
Carola, you and your husband have certainly raised a remarkable young lady. I'm assuming that you also pass on photo skills to her. Please thank her for sharing these amazing images, I certainly enjoyed them.
It been a while since I took a real hike.
I'm very proud of Kaefer. What a trip. The girl can hike! So many beautiful photos. A trip to remember for all time. Thank you for sharing your lovely daughter and her adventure with FFO. Have a nice weekend.
Well done, Kaefer! That looks like a beautiful hike, and challenging!
Absolutely stunning landscape. A couple of photos clearly show that's peaceful place with rushing of crashing water. Easy to see you enjoyed that challenge. Thanks for sharing your photos.
What an amazing hike. I particularly like the pictures of Loch Lomond. I would love to see it in person.
So unbelievably scenic! Well done, Kaefer!
Wow, what a gorgeous place to hike, and hurrah to Kaefer for making it. Scotland has been on my list for a while and thanks to these beautiful photos, I think I need to move it up to the top. :) What an awesome adventure. Have a super weekend Carola. hugs-Erika
WOW! absolutely stunning photos! Beautiful!
What a wonderful adventure. A walk I’d love to do too although not sure about the wild camping in the rain. Loch Lomond is a beautiful area and we were lucky enough to climb Ben Lomond a few years ago on a sunny day :) B x
What an amazing post. Not only did Kaefer hike all that way by herself (quite q feat), she also shot some pretty amazing photos. What an amazing post. Happy FFO goes to Kaefer.
Kaefer is a trooper. You should be proud of her. What a wonderful trip in spite of the weather. Thanks for sharing her journey, Carola.
The images are stunning, Carola! I especially love the shots of Loch Lomond and the highland cows. Kudos to Kaefer for completing such a challenging hike and sharing it with us!
A great performance in stunning scenery. Congratulations!
She is an intrepid young woman and I say well done! But it must have been absolutely grueling when the rains came and the tent couldn't dry out. I admire her tremendously.
Wow - einfach herrlich!
