Laundry
Over the recent weeks I was in a creative slump - scratch the "creative", there was no creativity at all. I haven't painted for weeks and even my photography was kind of plain. There was no inspiring bolt, just nothing. I actually think I need a break, but that still has to wait a little bit.
So I signed up for a very "simple" photography class that I found among Jeanne Oliver's summer classes. It's called "The art of seeing" by Cathy Walters.
There wasn't any new exciting information about photography for me in that class (and I hadn't expected that), but it gave me some good inspiration, and that was what I had been looking for. One of the projects (my favorite one) is to take 10 images a day (or whatever amount we like) for a week about our "dailyness". I very seldom take pictures of my "normal" daily life, so I dove right into it.
That day happened to be laundry day in my house. Is there anything more boring than doing laundry (well, cleaning the house, I guess, which I am totally in unfavor of - mildly put)? But with Kaefer's happy colored shirts and my colorful clothes pegs it turned into a joyful task.
I love to hang-dry our clothes, at least in the summer. Sure, it is more work, but hanging the clothes actually holds something very meditative.
My least favorite part of laundry is probably folding the clothes - as you can see from my pictures, I skipped the ironing. I don't do it, period (here goes your image of the German housewife, right?)
Tell me, do you like to do laundry or is it a dreadful chore? Which chore do you like the best and which one would you avoid if you could?
Hi Carola. Oh the sound of music to my ears. I am doing a short post on PPF tonight on just this subject. Wonderful post. It made me happy. The only thing is, I don' have colorful clothes pins. I am heading out tomorrow after the post office and finding some pins with color. Awesome.:) Thanks for the pick up.
ReplyDeleteI would have made a very bad traditional 'wife'. Cleaning has to be done, and I like it for the twenty-five seconds after it has been done. Dusting is the big one though. We have a LOT of dust collectors here. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteWashing which has been dried in the sun smells better too...
Colorful clothes pins would definitely make the process more fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those odd folks who actually enjoys ironing. Kind of contemplative to me.

I love these laundry pix -- so colorful! I enjoy hanging out the wash on the line, a lifelong habit that I learned from my mom.
ReplyDeleteI've also been in a creative slump and feeling totally uninspired, but I know the muse will return eventually. Have a lovely weekend, Carola!
these photos are wonderful! so colorful! i don't like to iron either. i have to say though, i like to vacuum! :)
ReplyDeleteAll that color makes your laundry look almost fun! I'm not fond of folding clothes either, but I do it because it saves me from needing to iron, which I gave up years ago.
ReplyDeleteI never liked unloading the dishwasher. I don't know why - it's just boring, I guess. Now I have a tiny kitchen and no dishwasher, so I just wash things as soon as I use them. "Problem" solved! :-)
I love these pictures! My mom loves to iron!! She finds it very calming! I love to dust! When I dust, I reorganize too ;o) Makes everything look new ;o) LOL! Dreadful chore? I don't know? I know, I am weird! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful Carola! So glad you found your way back to inspiration! I'm lucky that my hubby usually does laundry and I throw my stuff in. No guarantees on how it turns out, but I don't have to deal with it! I have a system for cleaning.... a little bit every day - maybe 10-15 minutes and then I quit! Doesn't get too overwhelming that way...
ReplyDeletethese are exactly the kinds of shot i love the most. and yours are so wonderful and colorful. i know exactly what you mean about feeling uninspired in my photography...it happens to all of us from time to time. i too have found a new class to be a great 'funk lifter'. :)
ReplyDeletethank you so much for stopping by my blog yesterday and leaving such a lovely comment. it's such a wonderful thing to connect with others who understand this interesting time in the journey of motherhood. xoxo
You have a very colorful laundry room - no bleach allowed!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos, Carola! I am a very lucky wife who hasn't ironed for 23 years - Steve does it all. I had to stop myself from diving in initially, but he is better at it than me now!
ReplyDeleteI have a "thing" for clotheslines, and your pictures are wonderful. Full of light and air.

Can't bear laundry or ironing either! My (sort of) 365 is made up of collections of moments from daily life - I am surprised by how much I love this sort of photography and I love looking back on it too. You've really made laundry look colourful and fun. Beautifully done. :)
