Scenic Byway

While hiking in Arches (more than a year ago, can you imagine?), we had this fantastic view from one of the trails to the area beyond Arches where the fog was still hanging out for a bit longer. After we had left Arches it was still light and we decided to take UT 128 that takes you in that area. We had remembered it from several years back and were eager to drive along here again.

It is marked as a scenic byway which is quite an understatement. It is breathtaking and there was almost no trafiic.

The road follows the Colorado River which has cut deep into the rock. There are mesas and some buttes with steep cliffs and the incredible red rock that gives so much character to this landscape.

Every now and then we stopped by the side of the road just to marvel at this amazing scenery. I also wanted to look at the plants that I found quite fascinating (and I still don't know what they are).

The reflections of the rock in the Colorado were so beautiful.

How can you not feel small and insignificant in the presence of these giants?

It was getting late and the light ws waning, so we decided to turn around at this point and drive back to Moab. I think this was the exact same spot where we turned around several years earlier.

With the sun in the West, the rocks had lost much of their light and color. It was a very different experience driving back, but still exciting. I don't think we will ever tire of this desert landscape - it is written across my heart.

Back in Moab we drove directly to the Moab Diner for a delicious dinner. After a long day of hiking we were tired and hungry. Here is my contribution to Nicole's Friday Face Off - quite disheveled.

  6. I looked up the plant you were curious about. I think this is what you saw:-

Ericameria is known by the common names goldenbush, rabbitbrush, turpentine bush, and rabbitbush. Most are shrubs, but one species (E. parishii) can reach tree stature.

  7. What pleasure it would be to spend time there and really get to understand the desert ecosystem and to know the plants. How fascinating it would all be and the discovery would never end. I will never do it, but I can dream! Many hugs - David

  9. That road looks amazing. I love how you described it as the place where the fog was, and yes, I can see that fog in your first photo. And sometimes the plants that are past their prime are still really beautiful. I love the dried stalks too. That is definitely the same LL Bean sweater I have. I think I will be wearing mine today since winter has returned. :) And you asked how I read so many books. I usually have 2 or 3 going at a time, one which I listen to when I am making art or driving, and then a book or a book on my Kindle. Plus I had that summer lake job last summer that gave me lots of time to read. I hope you have a super weekend. hugs-Erika

  14. I miss this area so much. Mr. M. and I have spent a lot of time in all the places you have featured. We stayed at an RV in Moab can't think of the name of it. Anyway, I put that plant's photo in a place that identifies plants and it said it is Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. I like it what ever it is. Your photo is so beautiful and I love your sweater. Thank you for sharing with FFO and have a very nice weekend.

  15. Your pictures are beautiful again. Thank you for showing them, I really like them all.
I also remembered a story of my own after reading your post.
There is a small lake not far from me, and once we went for a walk there. I found many plants along the way and they were all simple weeds.
I took pictures of them, but I didn't know their names.
Next time I should go there with a plant identification book so that I don't just call "something" what is beautiful.
    Because they deserve it.
I wish you all the best! Éva

  16. The pictures are beautiful. The Arches are on my Bucket List and I am hoping that I will get to them in the next year. I know my son is talking about taking his family (and I am sure he won't mind my tagging along :). Love the picture of you and the menu looks promising. Might have to look up the Moab Diner while we are out there. Lovely post, Carola ...
