Like every December I participated in
Susannah Conway's December Reflections on Instagram. It is a good way for me to reflect on the year, go through my photos and just take it a bit slow. Sometimes I feel the prompts are not really for me, but funny enough I always come up with something.
Here are my 31 photos. There are quite some faces to see and they, of course, are for Nicole's Friday Face Off.
There are a couple photos I want to say a few sentences about.
Day 24 was "patience". How do you express this in one photo? I was a bit lost first, but then I thought of my mom who loved to do jigsaw puzzles. There was a specific one of a painting by Albrecht Altdorfer, "The Battle of Alexander at Issus".
We had that as a puzzle of 1500 pieces and every year we would put it together between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Well, it was my mom who did most of it, but we all loved to help and find those pieces that just seem to disappear and then magically reappear right before you. This painting is probably the one I know best. When the puzzle was finally finished, it would be left on the table for a couple days and then put apart again and back into the box until the following Christmas.
Here is my mom working on a different puzzle (I think this was the English countryside):
Day 25's prompt was "memories". That is a wide open field. I chose a photo of my family - i.e. my husband and daughter, and my parents. This was taken during one of our visits back home. Staying with Omi and Opi was always special for Kaefer and I am so glad that she has these memories of happy, careless times with them. Both my parents adored her and she in turn adored her grandparents.
One last photo, for the prompt "birds", day 5. I had taken this photo of a Black-crowned Night Heron at the lake on a very foggy day when the lake was very still. The bird - one of my most favorites - is also perfectly still (that could have worked for "patience" as well) and the picture seems to be all grey in different shades. But there is the tip of the branch the heron is sitting on that has some light color as well as some slightly lighter part on the heron's chest where one solitary dappled ray of sun has hit. Not a masterpiece, but an image that truly reflects that morning.
I want to thank you, my wonderful readers, for reading my blog, leaving thoughtful comments and getting in touch outside of my blog. Thank you to those who checked in after our very forceful storms in the last week. And thank you for taking up with my sometimes weird English expressions that are colored by German.
To all of you I wish a happy and healthy 2026.

Ohhh I so love this post. So many memories, well they are your memories shared. LOL BTW NO procrastination I want to see you lovely art for the new challenge. Choosing a face is the main part, now just do it. Really my voice is joking not being mean and pushy. :) Thank you for sharing with FFO and have a very nice, creative weekend.
...a wonderful year of reflections. Be Healthy and Happy in 2026.
Dear Carola, your photos and memories are wonderful. I also love jigsaw puzzles.
Thank you so much for sharing, and Happy New Year to you ❤️ ☺️
Love the memories of your mum and her jigsaw puzzles . You will come to mind as I struggle with our puzzle this year. Happy new year to you. B x
Oh jeh.
It’s a wonderful collection of a year of outstanding photographs and memorable experiences, Carola. Your picture of the Black-crowned Night Heron is indeed exceptional. It has Japanese watercolour feel to it. Your skill with a camera is on display with every post and we all look forward to more in 2026. I hope your year will be filled with great joy and good health. Bug hugs - David
Lovely memories. I wish I had something like that of me with my grandparents.
Have a lovely new year.
It's always fun to see your photos Carola, and what a great look back. I especially like the older photos of you and your family and parents. Your dad is looking so lovingly at your daughter. It's really sweet. I'm glad you survived the crazy weather, and I hope you have a wonderful 2026 ahead-with lots of Kaefer time too. hugs-Erika

Wonderful reflections!
Hello, dear Carola,
you don't know me, but maybe you remember me from David's blog. I wrote that comment about "snow leopard" and the thoughts in its scene.
Should we ruin the experience of the living moment by taking a picture?
I would like to thank you for what you wrote later in your comment. You really understood what I wrote and thought about the movie, its essence and whether I am addicted.
I wish you all the best in the new year!

I loved looking at all of these, especially the family photo. I confess, that puzzle would send me right over the rails -- and I love puzzles! You've documented your photos well over the year and I especially loved your recollections. There is such a lot of love in this post! Happiest of New Years to you. ay it bring you only joy.
I enjoyed your retrospection! I hope your new year is wonderful and filled with all things you love.
Lovely collection of photographs and memories.
May 2026 be a peaceful and happy year for you and your family.
All the best Jan
That December reflection list is challenging, but you did a super job, Carola! It was fun to see photos of your mother doing jigsaw puzzles. My family members love doing jigsaw puzzles together to this day. The family photo is filled with love. And the heron is exquisite. All the best to you in 2026.
Hello, dear Carola,
you don't know me, but you might remember me from David's blog.
I wrote that comment about the movie "White Leopard" and about a scene in it, which contains deep thoughts about living the present moments or instead photographing them, which can destroy the real experience.
By the way, the original title of the movie is: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
I read your comment afterwards, and I want to thank you for your words.
You understood what I wrote about the essence of the scene and my fear of addiction. It was nice to read your understanding lines.
I wish you a Happy New Year!
All the best to you. Éva from Hungary
I need to find that instagram page. What marvelous reflections. Have a blessed 2026!
We haven’t worked a puzzle for a long time, but we never did the same one over again, always would start with a new one. I think we gave up only once. I don’t feel as patient as I used to be.
Dear Carola, I read your comment on Louise's blog, as I am also a follower on her blog. I wish you good health, both you and your husband. I made a special blog post on Friday entitled "Health Issues", as I am also experiencing similar issues. Sending you much love and warm hugs. Thank you so much for your posts, your visits and kind comments on my blog posts, and for your friendship.
Siempre encantada de pasar por tu blog, me gustaron mucho tus fotografías de recuerdos. También te deseo un Feliz Año 2026. Un abrazo.
Carola, Happy 2026 to you and your family and I hope it is filed with many wonderful experiences and adventures. I liked the way your photos creatively represented Ms Conway's December reflections. That 1500 puzzle looked quite involved and I just received my first jigsaw puzzle as a gift so will see how that one goes at 500 pieces. Thank you for your blog posting and for your comments on my posts. Both are much appreciated.
