An English Breakfast

In my last post I showed you a Cotswold kitchen, and today I'm going to tell you what we had for breakfast there - a typical English breakfast that prepares you for the day to come.

There was a fried egg as well as mushrooms (yum!), the typical grilled tomatoes and those sausages that I am not too crazy about.

I'm not a big fan of bacon either, but this version I actually liked.

Don't forget the baked beans! I think no English breakfast is complete without baked beans (at least that's the impression I got).

Of course triangle toast is an inherent part - with orange marmelade or apricot jam.

And no English breakfast without a pot of tea - and milk.

I'm linking up to Kathy's Food Wednesdays.

  1. Lots of this breakfast is not for me. Baked beans are too sweet for me (though himself loves them) and I am a vegetarian. Yum on the mushroom though. It is also too heavy a meal for me early in the day.
That said, my German father loved an English breakfast - though he often added black pudding (shudder) as well.

  2. Hi Carola, I am so glad you shared your English breakfast with us. It all looks so delicious, didn't know about the beans being traditional. I prefer that kind of bacon too-mostly meat instead of fat

  3. This breakfast looks delicious, Carola. Orange Marmelade is one of my favorites on sourdough toast. I like that they added grilled tomatoes and mushrooms. Fried eggs are the best, but no runny yolks for me My son drinks his tea with milk sometimes, just like the English do. I didn't know baked beans were part of their breakfast. : )

  5. The English Breakfast often features in classic detective fiction, as well as other novels. In the 19th century there were several cookbooks with recipes for the many foods that could be served, including many fish dishes and other savory preparations.

  6. I've been to London twice, and both times we stayed at hotels with breakfast included. This breakfast does fill you up and keep you going, but it did get a little repetitive after a few days. It is a classic though, and you have to have it at least once if you travel to England I think. Thanks for sharing and bringing back some fun travel memories. hugs-Erika

  7. That's such a big breakfast! I wouldn't need to eat much for the rest of the day. We had a breakfast like that at a B and B we stayed in in Banff Alberta - they advertised it as an English breakfast!

  8. I think I'd give the baked beans a pass! I do like the tomato though and remember that well. And the sausage. You don't have to eat lunch with a good English breakfast!

  9. Thanks Carola for sharing these breakfast photos. I had heard about English breakfast sausage, but didn't know it was served with bacon too. Baked beans seemed unusual and not something I would have expected as well. Where the eggs served any other way?

  10. The breakfast would be OK if things were cooked more for me. Glad you enjoyed it.

  11. Thank you for sharing your English Breakfast, I would have mine without the baked beans ...
But I do agree that no English breakfast should be without a pot of tea and some milk :)

    All the best Jan

  12. Okay so I'm with you on the egg, sausage (I'd pass thank you), bacon (yes please) grilled tomatoes and mushrooms (a little odd but I'll have some) but I think I would have to draw the line at the baked beans. I think that's dinner food, breakfast????? possibly no.
