Warming Up a Winter Day

Winter in Northern California, at least near the coast, is not really cold. Sure, we do have chilly nights, some mornings are quite frosty, and evenings again are chilly. But this January is a really weird one, with daytime temperatures in the high 60's or low 70's. Today we went to the coast and we could walk around with just a sweater on. Usually, you wear layers at the coast.

So at least at the moment we don't have any reason to "warm up" a winter day.

But still... there is something about winter that makes me long for hot chocolate. It only happens in winter - the wish to heat up some milk, pour cocoa powder in and set a little hill of whipped cream on top of it. Some - like the Geek and Kaefer - also love marshmallows with it (the Geek doesn't like the cream). When everyone is at home in the late afternoon or early evening I ask this question "who wants some hot chocolate?", and they can't be too quick to yell a loud "I do".

Each one of us has her or his own special mug. Mine is this one, orange with little owls - of course! I found it in this Etsy store - go take a look, this mug is still available (plus some other wonderful ceramics). This mug always puts a smile on my face and the hot chocolate tastes really good from it!

So, what do you do to warm up a winter day?

  1. I am longing for a winters day. And, if it ever comes around again, my favourite thing to do is snuggle up in bed with a book. Though hot chocolate, with a sprinkle of cinnamon, also has a lot of charm.

  3. Here it is incredibly warm, even in the Alps. The tulips already start to grow little green tips.

  4. Yummy, yummy, yummy... heiße Schokolade mag ich auch sehr gerne. Genau wie du, vorzugsweise im Winter. Mein Lieblingsgetränk ist aber heißer Tee... Sommer wie Winter.

  5. I'm suddenly craving this! It's been pretty cold here out on the East Coast, but yes the weather's been strange too (balmy days amidst deep freeze, brrr:).

  6. The mug is So You! I rarely have hot chocolate but yours looks tempting. I'm drinking Chai today. Maybe almost as good as chocolate.

  9. Well, did you have to show that delicious hot chocolate from so many angles -- it had me salivating! The warm sunny winter days are nice, but I am longing for some rain, that will clean the air and refresh the earth.

  10. Oh, that looks amazing!! Sadly, my cocoa is collecting dust in the cupboard because I'm just not feelin it at 75 degrees every single day. We certainly can't complain, but I do kinda miss the hot chocolate!

  11. That does look yummy. I enjoy a good cup of tea to warm up. . . I know, weird for an American. We've had unbelievably warm weather here . . . sometimes in the high 70's.
