Inspiration Avenue has challenged us with the theme "Shine". Immediately "Shoot for the stars and shine" shot (!) in my head and stuck. So I started to work - I thought about stars that sparkle in the dark and hands that reach out. In addition, I finally saw a chance to try out black gesso for the first time. So I started to work.
I must admit, I'm not really happy with this. I actually had my doubt to even post it here - but then I thought about my word of the year (authentic) and told myself - well, it's me, and sometimes my creations are not to my liking. Perhaps one day I'll find what's missing in this piece. On the other hand, perhaps I just leave it this way. It's a page in my freshly started art journal, so why not just leave it.
Here it is in all its imperfection:
Honestly, it reminds me of some school work... oh well. But this is happening in my studio right now.
I'm linking this to JRU studio for Sneak Peek Friday and Roban Studio's Art Walk Friday as well as Creative Every Day.
I really like the piece! I especially love the large star. Great job.
ReplyDeleteGreat...wonderfully simple and very powerful!
ReplyDeleteBoy, I like it! It is so graphic! And it speaks in its simplicity...maybe its that inner critic that needs to be silenced that is the REAL trouble! I am coming in from Studio JRU...so glad you joined us again this week!
ReplyDeleteOh... thank you for the great reminder about black gesso! I have been wanting to try it, but keep forgetting to buy some. Did you like it? I see bits showing through... did you remove the paint from on top of it or did you leave areas of the gesso unpainted? I really like the look! Thanks for the peek into your art journal... I like this page! :)
ReplyDeleteI must check out IA ... you are one busy, girlie!
ReplyDeleteI really like the two arms/hands in the forefront of your AJ page!

Thanks for sharing- love the simplicity. It's encouraging to try something different. :D
ReplyDeleteWell, Carola, I think it is beautiful! Especially the star with the sunburst. And I agree with your step in authenticity. It is something that I am working at myself. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteIt's the simplicity that makes it special. Artists have been doing stuff like this for kids rooms for years. I could definitely see someone buying it for a kids room for inspiration. I like it!
ReplyDeleteLove the warm colors and textures. Thanks for sharing! Stopping by from Studio JRU.
ReplyDeletehow could you not like this... love it!
ReplyDeletei've never used gesso - do you paint it on? sponge it on? love, love, love your lettering (is it carola's font)??
you "SHINE" in my book.
I like the simplicity/graphic feel of this Carola. I have some black gesso just waiting to be tried and a sketchbook to try it in. One of these days :-)

Despite your doubts I actually really like this! You've certainly captured the spirit of the "shine" challenge. That black background really makes the other colours pop :)
ReplyDeleteIt certainly says 'shine' for me! We all have pieces we don't like, but sometimes you come back and either love them or figure out that finishing touch I find.
ReplyDeleteI like it!
ReplyDeleteIt's not imperfect! It's perfect because you made it! Thank you for linking up to Art Walk Friday, which I think I'm going to stop doing for the lack of followers. Sorry it took me so long to visit...my husband comes home on Friday, from being out of town during the week, and I get busy with him until he leaves on Sunday. Then I get caught up on blogs and emails.
ReplyDeletegreat take on the prompt
ReplyDeleteAs with everything else I've done this week, I'm late again. You may not like it, but I certainly do. It is simple, yet complex at the same time. I love your color choices as well as the composition. I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it really SHINES in my book!
ReplyDeleteyes leave it as is! I really love the way the words in the stars play against the background. simply beautiful...
ReplyDeleteI happen to think it is beautiful...
ReplyDeleteI wish I would get around to playing in my journal...you've inspired me :)

I think its great as it is. I love to see collage pieces cut from text & so really like the stars. And the sentiment is perfect. Glad you decided to share!
